Revitalizing a Prized Landmark of Lancaster’s Industrial Past
Designed by renowned Lancaster architect C. Emlen Urban, the mill was opened in 1898 by Stehli Silks Corp. of Switzerland. The company chose to build their factory in Lancaster, PA because of its close proximity to the markets of New York City and Philadelphia.
At its peak, more than 2,100 people were employed by Stehli Silk Corporation. Housing was built for select workers in Lancaster city; helping to create the neighborhood surrounding the mill – known as Rossmere.
